The Exciting Island History

History is all around us and we’re delighted to show you..
Yes, there really were Pirates of the Caribbean! Looking out at our harbor, it’s easy to imagine the sight of tall pirate ships coming across the horizon! The Virgin Islands have a very interesting past, and it’s so much more than just pirates…and it’s surprisingly accessible. We have charming museums and guided tours, and there are even some places where you can look for treasure!

  • Forts! - Which ones to visit, and the great stories behind them.

  • “Step Streets” - St Thomas has 43 of them, one of which is VERY famous. We’ll explain.

  • Government House - Not just another pretty building, it was built as a wedding gift.

  • Emancipation Park - A tribute to the brave, and home of our “Liberty Bell”….nice shady spot, too.

  • Legislature Building - Still looks the same, and still has the same business going on inside!

  • Grand Galleria - This former hotel has been restored, and now houses some great shops!

  • BlackBeard’s Castle - Why you could easily spend a day here! Lots to see and do!

  • Bluebeard’s Castle - Rumored to be haunted… is this true? We know the stories.

  • Hotel 1829 - Yes, you can actually STAY here! It’s fabulous, and full of history!

  • Synagogue - One of our National Historic Sights…love the gift shop!

  • Churches - Some are hundreds of years old, and all are beautiful!

  • Haagensen House - Walk through and see original furniture, but where’s the kitchen??

  • Villa Notman -The view from the porch is world famous - house is darling too.

  • Hassel Island - Home to an old fort, and many remains of original structures.

  • Hassel Island Beaches - Fantastic place to “treasure hunt” - we found all kinds of historic loot!

  • Frenchtown - Charming and quaint, with a great museum & adorable “gingerbread” homes!

  • Market Square - A big part of island life for years and years… when to go for fresh goodies!

  • Post Office - Historic, yes. Gorgeous, yes. Mail your postcards, of course!

  • Famous Arches - Scattered around Charlotte Amalie… it’s fun to try & find them all!

  • Cobblestone Streets - Where they are and what some of them are surprisingly made of!

  • Main Street - What the buildings were used for BEFORE the jewelry stores moved in!

  • Royal Dane Mall - One of the original historic areas of town - quaint with great shops! Bring camera!

  • Hospital Ground - There are some interesting artifacts in plain view of the traffic! You’ll see!

  • Seven Arches Museum - One of our best kept secrets, it‘s always a hit with those in the know!

  • Enid M. Baa Library - Hard to find, but worth the search!

  • St Peter Great House - See how the wealthy folks lived! We wish we could move right in!

  • Drake’s Seat - Who was this Drake, and why did he sit in that particular seat?

  • Tillett Gardens - An old farm converted into an artists’ haven.. It’s off the beaten track & fantastic!

  • Historic Cemeteries - You can learn a lot from reading headstones, very interesting.
